These large herons can be found throughout the Philippines inhabiting freshwater wetlands such as marshes and rice fields, but they can also be found inhabiting mangroves. They either go solitary or in small groups but nest in colonies either in mangroves or tall reeds. Their diet consists of fish, frogs, and other small vertebrates. The IUCN lists them as least concern however there appears to be decrease in the population trend.
